U.S. Hotel and Resort Management, Inc., et al. v. Onity, Inc.

March 2014

Hausfeld LLP is one of the court-appointed co-lead counsel in a nationwide class action in the District of Minnesota on behalf of hotel chains that own defective electronic keycard door lock systems sold by Onity. Electronic security experts have demonstrated the vulnerability of these locks as they are easily hackable with off-the-shelf materials. Onity expressly warranted that it would "fix" or "replace" any Onity Lock that failed for "any reason," but it has only made available two unsatisfactory options to affected lock owners: 1) a "mechanical cap" that temporarily blocks access to the DC Port and which does not actually fix the defect; or 2) to replace and upgrade the Onity Lock's circuit board at the lock owners' expense. Because neither of the proposed options provide an adequate remedy to Plaintiffs and the Class, the plaintiffs are asking Onity to cover the costs of all replacement locks as it had previously promised.
